DVD: What's available

February is Black History Month in the United States, and several of Tuesday's video releases celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans or tell the stories of people of color. Here are a few.

"Night Catches Us" stars Anthony Mackie as a former member of Philadelphia's Black Panther party who returns to his hometown upon the death of his father and finds that while some things have changed, plenty of others haven't. Kerry Washington plays the wife of a slain Panther leader who, like Mackie's character, is living with the hurt and the hate of the events of the revolutionary 1960s. The film is rated R and lists for $26.98 for DVD and $29.98 for Blu-ray disc.

"Skin," based on the best-seller "When She Was White," stars Sophie Okonedo in a true story set during apartheid-era South Africa. Okonedo plays Sandra, a black girl born to white Afrikaner parents who were unaware of their own black ancestry. Although her parents tried to raise her as "white," community prejudice wouldn't have it. "Skin" follows her 30-year journey as she struggles to find her place in a changing world (Rated PG-13, $24.98).

A couple of releases from Scholastic Storybook Treasures can help educate while entertaining young viewers. "Duke Ellington (and more stories to celebrate great figures in African American history)" offers music and stories narrated by the likes of Forest Whitaker, Phylicia Rashad, Billy Dee Williams and Samuel L. Jackson. "Lincoln and Douglas: An American Friendship" features four animated stories with narration by James Earl Jones and Danny Glover, as well as an interview with author Nikki Giovanni. The releases are not rated and sell for $14.95 each.
